Is something wrong with your garbage disposal that requires professional plumbing assistance? Here are 4 ways to know for sure, along with some simple and practical self-help tips.

  1. Loss of Power. If it appears that your disposal has no power, check your fuse-box or circuit breaker box to be certain. If the unit has power, check underneath the unit to locate a red Reset button. If it’s popped out, the disposal motor has overheated, probably due to a jam up. Go ahead and clear the jam, but don’t put your hand inside the disposal without first shutting off the power supply.  Once the mess is cleared out, reset the overload safety function by pressing the red button. If it pops up again, you’ll probably need professional assistance to clear the jam.
  2. The Disposal Leaks. If you’re a determined do-it-yourselfer, begin troubleshooting by checking the drain connections. If the leak stems from the drain pipe, you can stop it by replacing he rubber gasket. If your disposal is still on the new side, check the ring near the sink flange and make sure it’s the right size and properly installed. If the leak is coming from the disposal, it probably needs to be replaced due to internal rust and corrosion.
  3. Excessive Noise. Sometimes a piece of metal, glass, bone, or other object will enter the disposal and cause a racket when you turn it on.  Loud noises can also result from loose mounting screws, worn bearings, broken flyweights, or from worn out lugs or blades. Some models allow for the shredder ring to be replaced but, usually,  worn out lugs and blades mean it’s time for a new disposal.
